If you live in the desert or one of the sunnier areas of the country, then you have probably seen home solar power systems in use, but might not have thought that it was worth the money. Until recently, the only people who used these were those who were very “green” or environmentally conscious. Times are changing though, and there are many reasons why you should consider adding solar to your home.

The primary advantage of home solar power systems is that you can generate electricity without paying a huge electric bill each month. But what most people don’t know is that in many areas of the country, you can actually sell your excess power back to the power company, essentially making money on your power. Some people refer to this as having your electric meter run backwards.

Another reason why home solar power systems are becoming more and more popular is because they have become increasingly easy to install and are much more affordable than they used to be. In addition, there are many government programs that can save you even more money on your solar heating. Through local financing offers, government tax incentives, and tax deductions, you should be able to install some form of solar heating or power system in your home for very little money.

Whether you want to use solar power as a way to generate electricity, make money, or even heat your water, it is also a very good thing to do for the environment. You might not think that your small contribution would make a difference, but it does. All it takes is one person in a neighborhood to pique the interest of other people and before too long, many more households will be relying on the sun for energy, rather than fossil fuels.
